Pyrite - Where is it found and how is it made?
This stone is often referred to as “fools gold” as its golden tones meant that it was notoriously mistaken by naïve prospectors for real gold. While Pyrite has a similar brass-yellow colour and metallic look to gold, it is brittle and will break rather than bend as gold does.
Pyrite gets its name from the Greek word for fire (pyr) because it creates sparks to start a fire when struck against metal or stone.
It has a chemical composition of iron sulphide (FeS2) and is one of the most common natural sulphide minerals. Pyrite is found worldwide in a variety of geological settings, from igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock to hydrothermal mineral deposits. These are usually organic environments, where decaying organic material consumes oxygen and releases sulphur.
It forms in masses, stalactites, grains, globes, striated cubes or twelve-sided pentagonal dodecahedral crystals. Pyrite often replaces plant debris and shells to create pyrite fossils or flattened discs called pyrite dollars.
The richest Pyrite deposits are found in Chile, Peru, Portugal, Spain, Russia, UK and USA.
